Why We Are Restless is informed by a certain Tocquevillean urgency. As the Storeys tell us in their introduction, students, among most privileged young people America, are profoundly uneasy, souls agitated and restless as they ponder questions about how should live what will make them happy. The attempt to sense of this examining thought call four “old French philosophers” (xii). They acknowledge that such an approach, focusing on writings Montaigne, Pascal, Rousseau, Tocqueville way understanding contemporary American unease, might seem “counterintuitive” (xii) not wrong. moralistes no means only thinkers who can shed light authors argue distinctively modern form restlessness.
